FAQ
The Service
The Bat Mitzvah ceremony is incorporated into the usual Saturday morning service, where Regina will read from the Torah (Five Books of Moses / Old Testament), sacred scrolls made of parchment paper which have been sewn together and written by hand by a Sofer (scribe).
What to Wear
We suggest that guests wear respectful attire for the service in the synagogue. The party will be smart casual.
Tallit – Prayer Shawl
The Tallit is frequently worn at services where the Torah is read. The 613 fringes remind us of the 613 mitzvot (good deeds) that we are commanded to do each year. Regina's Tallit was designed and made in Israel by Yair Emanuel for the Women of the Wall movement, which seeks equality to worship at the Western Wall. It is the Four Mothers Tallit, with each corner representing and honoring our foremothers: Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah.
Yarmulka / Kippa
Wearing a head covering is a sign of respect for G-d, but it is completely optional. Commemorative Kippot are available for you to wear / keep. This does not constitute any affirmation of religious belief.
Guest Seating
Please arrive a few minutes early to find your seat in the sanctuary. Seating is open.
Service Duration
The morning service typically lasts about two hours and is followed immediately by a kiddush, a ceremonial nosh of challah, wine, and sweets.
Sanctuary
The service will be conducted from the Bimah or pulpit. At the center of the Bimah is the Aron Ha Kodesh, Holy Ark, which holds the Torah, our sacred scrolls. Above the Ark is the Ner Tamid (Eternal Light), which symbolizes the eternal presence of God and permanence of the Torah.
Rising / Sitting
Whenever the Ark is opened and at various other times, as directed, the congregation rises in respect. This does not constitute any affirmation of religious belief.
